An Introduction to Bizzy Breaks - For Bizzy Bodies and Bizzy Minds

On Apr 28, 2022, Ms Howard attended a Bizzy Breaks webinar which was run by the Irish Heart Foundation. Bizzy Breaks focusses on movement, mindfulness and wellbeing as well as physical literacy. The programme offers a suite of cross-curricular resources, games and lesson plans. This webinar was also incredibly helpful and especially informative on how activities can be adapted and made inclusive. Bizzy Break activities last for between 5-10 minutes each so they are the perfect addition to classrooms. You can find out more about Bizzy Breaks on their website (https://irishheart.ie/schools/primary-schools/bizzy-breaks/ ). We will be incorporating Bizzy Breaks into our classrooms to ensure our children reach the recommended 60 minutes of activity each day.

Physical Literacy Day 4 Seminar-

Developing Motivation and Confidence

On the 27th October 2022, Ms Lennon and Ms Howard attended the fourth seminar of the Physical Literacy series- Developing Motivation and Confidence.

What is Physical Literacy?

“Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”(Whitehead, 2014)

This PDST PE team have developed a resource to support teachers in developing physically literate children through the lens of Fundamental Movement Skills. This resource, entitled Move Well, Move Often, has been designed to complement the teaching of the Irish Primary School Physical Education (PE) Curriculum and aims to provide a range of tools to support the teacher in teaching fundamental movement skills throughout the primary school.

Teachers in our school are working on four of the Fundamental Movement Skills this year. Two linked with our chosen strand for development, Gymnastics, and two linked with other strands. Each teacher will choose which Fundamental Movement Skills they will work on throughout the year.
